Sports Bets Explained
All Up Bet – An all-up bet involves choosing a maximum of four selections (Win or Place) in four different races. The prices of all selections (legs) are multiplied to determine the final dividend.
Best Fluc – Best fluc wagers can be placed up to 30 minutes prior to the advertised start-time of each race and are available on most Metropolitan meetings. The Win dividend is paid at the best of the Official Bookmakers’ fluctuations and the Place is paid at a price equivalent to the Tote Place dividend declared in the state in which the race is run.
Best Odds – Best odds is available on non-Metro races. It guarantees the better of the official Bookmakers’ starting price (SP) and the official Win dividend. The punter should follow the odds at the various TAB’s (VIC, NSW, UNI) before selecting the Best Odds option of the one which is paying the highest price for the selected horse.
Box Trifecta – A box trifecta is a bet where you to choose three or more selections. You can choose as many runners as you like from the same race, however three of the selections must place First, Second and Third.
Box Quinella – A box Quinella is where you choose more than two selections. You can choose as many runners as you like from the same race, however two of the selections must place First and Second in any order.
Country Best – Bets available for all non-metropolitan thoroughbred races. Country Best is the dividend of the Vic and NSW TABs for Win, Place, and Each-Way wagers.
Daily Double -This is a bet on the first place position in two consecutive races, generally the first two of the day. The bettor must correctly pick both races to win.
Daily Triple/Pick Three - This is a bet on the first place position in three consecutive races.
Exacta: This bet is on the first and second place horses in a given race in the correct order.
First Four – First four betting requires nominating the first four (4) place getters in correct order.
First Team to Score – This is a bet on the first team to score in the rugby tournament.
First Try Scorer - this is a bet on who will score first in the rugby game.
Fixed Odds – is a set price at which the Win portion of a bet will be paid at the fixed price as determined by the bookmaker.
Futures Betting: Futures betting offers future bets with great odds on big upcoming events.
Highest Innings Score – A cricket bet based on the highest number of runs either side will score.
Last Try Scorer – this is a bet on the player who scores last in the rugby game.
Line Betting: Line betting is also known as handicap or points start – is a popular bet type where the bookmaker has handicapped an event.
Lowest Innings Score – A cricket bet based on the lowest number of runs either side will score.
Match Betting - Odds on both rugby teams to win the match.

Over/Under Bets – An over/under bet is a wager in which a sportsbook will predict a number for a statistic in a given game and bettors wager that the actual number in the game will be either higher or lower than that number.
Outright Winner – This is a bet on who you think will win a rugby tournament.
Parlays – A parlay is a single bet that is combined with other individual bets and is dependent on all of those wagers winning together. The key advantage of a Parlay is that only some – not all – of your multi-bet legs need to be successful to win a dividend. In addition, some Parlays also include single bets on each selection or leg.
Place: This is a bet that the chosen horse will finish first or second.
Proposition Bets – A proposition bet is a bet made on at outcome or proposition.
Quinella: This is a bet is on the first and second place horse in a given race in any order.
Season’s Points – For this bet, a prediction is made on how many points each side will win during the course of the cricket season.
Show: This is a bet that the chosen horse will finish first, second, or third.
Standout Trifecta – A standard trifecta bet is where you select as many runners as you like from the same race, however you must nominate the runner you think will place First, Second or Third.
Starting Price – SP is the official and final Bookmakers’ price up until the advertised start time of the race and is only available for Thoroughbred racing for telephone betting. If a Win or Win/Place wager is placed at SP, the Win portion will be paid at a rate equal to the official on-course Bookmakers’ SP.
Standout Quinella – A standout Quinella is where you select as many runners as you like from the same race, however you must nominate the runner you think will place First or Second.
Team Performance – Predictions are made on the overall performance of a team during a rugby match.
Top Batsman – A cricket wager where a bettor predicts which batsman will score the most runs in a match.
Total Runs in an Inning – A cricket wager based which predicts the total number or runs each side will score in an individual Inning.
Tournament Bets – A cricket wager where the bettor places a wager on the team that will win the entire tournament, rather than just one match.
Top Try Scorer Betting – A wager when you predict the top scorer of the rugby competition.
Total Points – This is betting on the total number of points that will be scored during the rugby game.
Teasers - A teaser allows the bettor to combine his bets on two or more different games. The bettor can adjust the point spreads for the two games, but realizes a lower return on the bets in the event of a win.
Trifecta: This bet is on the first, second, and third places in a given race in the correct order.

Soccer Terms
Banker – A sure bet.
Chalk Player – One who only bets on their favourite sports and teams.

Single - A straight bet on one selection to win. This is the most common and easiest sports bet to place.
Totals - Sports bet on whether the total score will be
over/under a given mark.
Value – Getting the best odds on a wager.
All Rounder – A player skilled in both batting and bowling, and who regularly does both in matches.
Arm Ball – A type of ball bowled by an off spin bowler. The ball has little or no spin on it.
Attacking – A bowling tactic designed to take wickets.
Ball – 5 ½ ounce red ball used for professional cricket tournaments.
Back Foot Shot – A shot played by the batsman with his weight mostly on his back foot.
Bat – A wooden club made of willow with a cane handle. It is used to hit the ball.
Batsman – A player currently batting on the field.
Beamer – A ball that does not bounce on the pitch. The ball passes the batsman at head height.
Bouncer - A short pitched ball that bounces up towards the height of the batsman's head.
Bowl – To hurl a cricket ball towards the batsman.
Bump Ball - A ball which is played off the bat almost instantly into the ground and is caught by a fielder.
Bye – A run scored when the batsman does not touch the ball with his body or bat.
Chest On – A bowler who delivers the ball with his chest facing the batsman.
Closing the Face – Turning the face of the bat inwards and hitting the ball to the leg side.
Corridor of Uncertainty - An area just outside the batsman's off stump where he is unsure whether he has to leave or play the ball.
Dead Ball – A ball where no runs can be scored.
Dolly – An easy catch.
Duck – A score of zero.
Full Toss – A ball that reaches the batsman without bouncing
Half Volley – To hit the ball as it rises immediately after bouncing.
Inside Out Shot – Hitting the ball pitched on or outside leg stump to the off side of the field.
Leading Edge - The edge of a cricket bat closest to the bowler's end of the pitch.
Leg-Side – The area of the pitch behind the batsman’s legs.
Lollipop – An easy ball to hit.
No Ball - An extra run credited to the batting side when a bowler bowls a no ball.
Off the Mark – When the batsman scores his first run.
Over – A series of six balls bowled by a single bowler in sequence.
Paddle – A sweep shot.
Pair – When a batsman gets a duck in both innings.
Retire – To end one’s innings.
Score – How many runs a side has scored and how many wickets it has lost in an inning.
Series – A group of matches between two sides.
Shot - A batsman attempting to hit the ball with his bat.
Side – A team of eleven cricket players.
Single – One run scored off a single ball.
Skipper – The captain of a cricket side.
Slow Ball – A ball bowled by a bowler that is slower than his usual delivery.
Take a Wicket – To get a batsman out.
Target - The number of runs the side batting last needs to score in the final innings of a match to win.
Track – The pitch
Walk – To walk off the field after being ruled out by an umpire.
Wicket – The pitch.
Zooter – A ball that has little or no spin on it.
Advantage – The period of time in which the non-offending side have the opportunity to gain sufficient territory to negate the need to stop the game due to infringement.
Ankle Tap – An ankle tap is a form of tackle.
Ball Back - If the ball enters touch, then play is restarted by a line-out at the point where the ball left the field of play.
Blitz Defence - The idea of this technique is to prevent the attacking team gaining any ground by tackling them behind the gain line and forcing interceptions and charged down kicks.
Conversion - If a team scores a try, they have an opportunity to "convert" it for two further points by kicking the ball between the posts and above the crossbar.
Drop Kick - A drop kick is when a player kicks the ball from hand and the ball touches the ground between being dropped and kicked.
Dump Tackle – The dump tackle is a tackling technique. The tackler wraps his arms around the ball carrier's thighs and lifts him a short distance in the air before forcibly driving him to the ground.
Flanker – Are also known as breakaways or wing forwards.
Forward Pass - A forward pass occurs when the ball fails to travel backwards in a pass. If the ball is not thrown or passed forward but it bounces forward after hitting a player or the ground, it is not a throw-forward.
Gain Line - The gain line is an imaginary line drawn across the centre of the pitch when there is a breakdown in open play, such as a ruck, maul or scrum.
Goal - A goal is scored when a player kicks the ball through the plane bounded by the two uprights and above the crossbar.
High Tackle - A high tackle is a form of tackle where the tackler grasps the ball carrier above the line of the shoulders.
Late Tackle - A late tackle is a tackle executed on a player who has already passed or kicked away the ball.
Mark - A mark is the place where the game will restart after a stoppage.
Off-Load Pass - A short pass made by a player being tackled before he reaches the ground.
Penalty - Penalties are awarded for serious infringements like dangerous play, offside and handling the ball on the ground in a ruck.
Place Kick - The place kick is a kicking style commonly used when kicking for goal.
Ruck – A Ruck is formed when the ball is on the ground and two opposing players meet over the ball. Rucks commonly form at tackles, but can form anywhere in the field of play where the ball is on the ground.
Scrum – In a scrum, the eight forwards from each team bind together and push against each other
Spear Tackle - A spear tackle is a dangerous tackle in which a player is picked up by the tackler and turned so that they are upside down.
Tackle - A tackle takes place when one or more opposition players grasp onto the ball carrier and succeed in bringing him/her to ground and holding them there.
Try – A try is the primary method of scoring. A try is worth five points.
Tunnel – When a scrum is formed, the gap between the legs of three players who form the front row is called the tunnel.
Up and Under – An up and under is a high short punt onto or behind the defending team.
Blanket Finish – When two or more horses finish a race very closely.
Furlong – Races are measured in furlongs. A furlong is equal to one-eighth of a mile.
Green Horse – A horse that has not raced or that has only raced a few times.
Horse – A male horse that is over 4 years of age.
Mare – A female horse that is over 4 years of age.
Post Position – A horse’s position in the starting gate.
Purse – The amount of prize money distributed to the owners of the first five or six finishers.
Qualifying Race – A race that does not have a purse. It is used to determine a horse’s ability.
Scratch – A horse that is withdrawn from the race before it starts.
Tongue Scratch – Strap used to tie down a horse’s tongue to prevent choking during a race.
Trainer – The trainer keeps a horse in top racing condition.

Air Ball – A shot that misses the backboard and rim of the basket.
Blocked Shot – Stopping a shot attempt from reaching the basket.
Bounce Pass – Passing the ball to another player by bouncing it on the floor.
Chest Pass – A two handed pass thrown from the passer’s chest in a straight line to the chest area of the receiver.
Conversion – Free throw.
Defense – The team not in possession of the ball whose objective is to keep the opponent from scoring a basket.
Drive – A quick dribble directly to the basket in an effort to score.
Dunk - Making a basket by stuffing the ball down through the rim and into the net.
Field Goal – A basket scored on any other shot than a free throw – worth two or three points depending on the distance.
Foul – A violation resulting from illegal contact with another player.
Free Throw – A shot taken from behind the free throw line after a foul.
Jump Shot – An offensive attempt by any of the five players on the court.
Lay-Up – An offensive attempt where the player lays the ball of the backboard and into the net.
Pass – A bounce pass to turn over the ball to a teammate.
Rebound – Controlling the ball following a missed shot.
Shot – A player’s attempt to score a basket.
Steal – Intercepting a pass.
